THE MERCHANT OF VENICE

April 16-26, 1998

Written by William Shakespeare
Directed by Natalie Holbrook

DESCRIPTION The Merchant of Venice is one of Shakespeare's most popular yet most troubling works. The hard-hitting play deals with the problems of usury, the difficulties of repaying debts of love, and the intolerance and racism that permeates our society to this day. And this is where our production is set, in modern-day America, where pop culture embraces shock jocks, mass-televised murder trials, and spokesmen from every hate group with access to a microphone. We shall "hold the mirror up to nature" and find the reflections of the past not to be dimmer, only more slightly concealed.
