Choose two sides to read for auditions. Please don't choose both young woman sides; you may choose one and then another side of your choosing.
Please be familiar with the sides you have chosen. Memorization is welcome but not required.

This gripping Expressionist masterpiece follows a young stenographer trapped in a suffocatingly mechanical society as she is driven from a loveless marriage into a passionate affair—and ultimately, a desperate act of murder.
Character Descriptions
Helen Jones (Woman, 20-30): Helen Jones, a.k.a. Young Woman is the play’s primary protagonist, who feels trapped and is struggling against societal expectations and personal desires.
George Jones (Man, 40-50): Helen’s husband. A successful businessman who is emotionally simplistic and treats Helen as a possession. Mechanical, emotionally distant, and demanding.
Mother/Judge (Woman, 50+): Helen’s mother is resigned to her fate and the expectations of her gender. She emphasizes financial security over emotional fulfillment and pressures Helen to marry George. This actor will also play a courtroom judge in another scene.
Lover (Any, 25-40): A charismatic and adventurous person who offers Helen a temporary escape from her mundane life. Ultimately serves as the inspiration for Helen to kill George.
Telephone Girl/Ensemble (Woman, 18-25): Helen’s coworker, who introduces her to the speakeasy and the lover. She’s lively and has a carefree approach to life.
Ensemble (10 actors): Ensemble actors will play multiple supporting characters throughout the show. Featured roles include Doctor, Nurse, Priest, Defense Lawyer, Prosecutor, Filing Clerk, Adding Clerk, Stenographer, and more!
